Jonathan Farnsworth -Plus 3 generations
Jonathan Farnsworth, the sixth son and tenth child was born 1 JUN 1675 in Groton, Mass., in an exceedingly troubled time. Within three weeks of his birth, King Phillips' War broke out, in which the first battle was fought at Swanzey, on the 20th of June 1675. Nine months later on 2 Mar 1676 savages attacked Groton, burned nearly every dwelling house in town and all of the inhabitants fled for safely to Concord. There Jonathan spent two of his infancy years, the child of refugees among strangers, and where the family lived the best way they could. When those terrible years were over the family returned to Groton and rebuilt their homestead. They took the chance of further attack by the Indians. Jonathan was taken by the Indians which was a sadness that was never forgotten by the family. He grew to be a teenage lad with the Indians before he returned to his family and friends. It is not known if he was taken when the Indians attacked for the second time (when the exposed settlement was burned) or if he was stolen some time before. At this time many children were taken by the Indians to be tortured and killed, traded or raised by the tribe (if they showed extreme bravery). Thus, all of Jonathan's early life was passed amid perils and privations. His father died when he was thirteen years old. It is not known if he ever saw his father alive again after his abduction, but his later training was received from his mother (who appeared to have guided him with intelligence and fidelity). Being raised by the Indians gave him an insight to the human relations between the Indians and the whites. His know how helped make peace between the Indian people and the white people. He married in 1698 to Ruth Shattuck, daughter of John and Ruth Whitney Shattuck of Watertown. She was born 24 JUN 1678. Jonathan lived on the land which has been assigned to his father, by Groton, Mass. That part of Groton, was on the incorporation of Harvard 1732, made part of the new town. He owned the covenant with the church in Groton 21 Oct 1715. They, with their son, Jonathan Jr. were dismissed from that church, a recommend to lay the foundation of the church in Harvard, 14 SEP 1733. He led the quiet life of a farmer in that town all his mature years and died there 16 JUN 1748. His children are as follows: 1. Ruth 2. Jonathan 3. Ephraim 4. Ruben*** 5. Phineas 6. Prescilla 7.
